Is there anything I can do to prevent the spaces between my wood floor boards in the winter. They seem to close up completely in the summer months but the cracks in the winter don;t look very good.
Often simply adding a humidifier to the heating system can solve a lot of the problem of cracks in winter.   A hot air heating system tends to dry the air out which lowers the humidity of the room.

Spaces between boards are not the results of the wood floor fault. The wood boards will shrink as humidity goes down. So you will notice gaps. But those gaps will go away in the summer. Gaps will reappear in the winter. This is a continuous process. Your builder  must install this seasonal swelling and shrinking.

You can use engineered flooring as a solution. Engineered woods shrinks less than solid wood flooring.

These peoblems occur oftenly. This is the reason crawl space ventillation is used these days. It will not damage wood and makes it long-lasting.

I also believe that when installing wood flooring, you have to make sure the wood and the substrate material you are going over are also at the proper moisture levels.  This really helps with less expansion and gapping during dryer months.

Temperature and installation could be factors but the most likely and most common cause of board shrinkage is the lack of proper humidity controls. The humidity should be between 35 and 55 percent year round. The use of humidifiers and dehumidifiers will prevent the boards from shrinking or swelling.

There isn't much you can do about this, this is due to the fact how heat makes wood expand and cold makes it contract. You can consider insulation the floor via the basement to try and keep the heat in. However, this is also due to improper installation as the spacing should happen near the walls and not the floor boards themselves.
